Arterial injuries complicating orthopaedic surgery.

چکیده

The possibility of accidental injury to an artery in the course of surgical treatment has been known for centuries. Galen described an incident in which a young surgeon damaged the brachial artery in the course of phlebotomy, and commented that most such cases resulted in aneurysm. William Hunter also described arterial injury as a complication of phlebotomy. In recent years there have been a number of articles in which a variety of arterial injuries following orthopaedic surgery have been described. Many orthopaedic operations are done near major arteries, and often under a tourniquet when an injury can easily be overlooked. It is, perhaps, surprising that with so many operations annually performed, the number of accidents is so low.

Injuries Associated with Femoral Shaft Fractures with Special Emphasis on Occult Injuries

Background: Fractures of the femoral shaft are mostly the result of high-energy accidents that also cause multiple trauma injuries, in particular ipsilateral knee and hip injuries. The purpose of this study was to investigate the incidence of injuries associated with femoral shaft fractures and how many of them were undetected. Methods: We studied 148 patients (150 femoral shaft fractures) wi...

Unusual Complete Isolated Scaphoid Dislocation, Report of a Case

Isolated scaphoid dislocations are extremely rare injuries and are commonly associated with significant ligamentousdisruptions. A dorsiflexion-supination force upon the hand is considered as the most common mechanism of injury.Different treatment options have been proposed for the management of this uncommon entity, ranging from conservativetreatment with closed reduction and casting to a wide ...

Anterior Shoulder Dislocation and Ipsilateral Humeral Shaft Fracture

Simultaneous dislocation of shoulder and humeral shaft fracture is a rare injury, and there is no clear protocol for its treatment. Herein we present a case of a 15-year-old boy, who suffered from a job-related accident and sustained fracture of humeral shaft associated with ipsilateral anterior shoulder dislocation and fracture of greater tuberosity 15 years ago. He received closed reduction o...

Axillary Artery Injury Associated with Proximal Humerus Fracture: A Report of 6 Cases

Proximal humerus fractures are common, but associated injury of the axillary artery is uncommon. The majority of published blunt traumatic axillary artery injuries are associated with anterior glenohumeral dislocation; a few are associated with isolated proximal humerus fractures or fracture-dislocation. Experience within our institution demonstrates that axillary artery injury is often unreco...

Acute ischaemia complicating limb trauma.

DeBakey and Simeone (1946) found that 686 per cent of amputations among United States troops in the second world war were done as the result of arterial trauma. Amputation was required in 4O 3 per cent of cases of arterial trauma. Arterial injuries associated with fractures showed a 50 per cent loss of limb with reparative measures, whereas there was a 70 per cent loss of limb when the vessel w...
